SUTURE MEDITERRANEE MEDITERRANEAN SUTURES 2015-2023 COSTANZA FERRINI
The invisible trace of the routes on the mantle of sea followed by exiles are shown with magenta linen cords that bind one shore to another. The routes refer to the exile of poets around the Mediterranean Sea of the last millennium. For this reason I have chosen not to show their direction.
I first show those in Ibn Hamdis’ life – a collection of exiles – many of which were endlessly repeated in the following millennium by other men and women, including poets, up to the present day.
On some routes prows parted the waters so often that if the same routes were ploughed in the earth the wound would have the shape and depth of a valley. But the sea flattens the water in silence. The short pieces of linen cords mark out the lips of these invisible wounds as emergent,, raising on the surface. Many new stitches are added for each route to render the sutures of these wounds.
